5 best things to do and see on Hvar, Croatia

Have you always dreamed of visiting paradise? Well, there is this one island that belongs to Croatia that is just the place for you. This island is called Hvar and is the perfect place for your next trip to the colorful country Croatia.

Things to do

Hvar, one of the most beautiful Croatian island. Hvar is an amazing destination for a daytrip from Split or an island to stay at for a longer period. Because of its beauty and relaxed atmosphere, you can easily spend a couple of days or even weeks here if you have the time. On this island, you have plenty of things to do and to see. Let me tell you all about the five best things to do and see on Hvar for your next trip to this amazing island.

1. Robinson Trail

Hvar is an island with many beaches, all of them gorgeous with clear, blue water. However, there is this one trail that you can follow, that brings you to some of the bluest waters there is surrounding the island. This trail is called the Robinson Trail because it ends at Robinson beach. This is a (flat) hike of 5km and brings you to 3 amazing beaches and multiple viewpoints that look over the ocean. The Robinson trail was my personal favorite activity on Hvar. It shows you all the beauty this island has to offer.

2. Explore Hvar Old town

When you are going to Hvar, exploring the old town is something that can’t miss out of your Itinerary. This way you get to explore the town and see all the beauty it has to offer. From small streets, to old buildings, Hvar offers so much.

Start walking from the harbor and dive in one of the streets which will guide you to another street and so on.

3. Beach Time

When being on Hvar, you can’t skip a beach day. There are many beaches to choose from. When walking alongside the coast, there are many places where you can drop your towel and climb down one of the ladders that lead you in the water.

In Croatia there’re no beaches with sand, only beaches with stones. So do bring a towel and maybe an extra shirt to put under your head as a pillow. This way you have a great relaxing day at one of Hvar’s beaches. Also bring some water shoes because in the water there are many (slippery) stones and with shoes on you will be safe and steady.

How to find the perfect spot for some relaxing time? This all depends on your preference. You can get some inspiration from the Robinson trail because this takes you along some of the best beaches on the island.

4. Visit Fort Fortica

The best spot for a beautiful sunset in Hvar is Fort Fortica. This old fort is open for tourists and has an amazing panorama view over the harbor of Hvar and the Paklinski Islands.

Hvar is by some people known as THE party island near Split. Well, it is true. Hvar has a wild nightlife,  if this is what you are looking for. Cafe’s and bars are lined up next to the ocean and get their music pumped up around the evening.

If you are not the extreme party type, don’t worry. There are also lots of cute, authentic restaurants where you can sit outside, sip a cocktail and enjoy the live music.

The nightlife of Hvar has something to offer for everyone.

How to get around
By foot – If you are staying in Hvar town, you can do everything by foot. Hvar is a small town with some hills. The thing I noticed, was that in the center of Hvar town, there were almost to no cars. Get your good shoes or flipflops on and walk to your next activity.
(Rental)car – If you want to explore more of the island, outside of Hvar Town, you can get a rental car. This is the best way to see more of the island and have all the freedom of deciding when and where to go.

Ho(s)tel/ Airbnb – Hvar has many options when it comes to accommodation. If you come to the island and only visit places in and near Hvar Town, I recommend to get an accommodation in the center of the town. The town is a busy place but not loud. Sleeping in the center is the best place because the restaurants, ferries and activities will be close to you.

We found an amazing Airbnb in the cutest street of Hvar. I couldn’t recommend a place more. The location is truly perfect. For the link to the Airbnb click here. (No ad.)

Best time to visit –The best time to visit Hvar, Croatia is in the shoulder seasons of Europe. The best time is from May to the end of June and from the end of august to the end of September. The weather is amazing and the island will be less crowed than in the middle of July and august.

Words you can use – Local people always appreciate it when you can speak a few words in their language. Here are some words you can use while being in Croatia.
