A guide to visiting Schloss Drachenburg in Germany

In Germany, there are many castles to explore. However, Schloss Drachenburg is a castle you don’t want to miss. With its beautiful architecture you will be in awe at the sight. The area is huge so you won’t get bored at all.

An hour away from The Eifel Region in Germany, is Königswinter. This city is known for its beautiful castle on the hill, Schloss Drachenburg.

But what is so special about this castle? Back in 1882 the first stone was laid of Schloss Drachenburg and two years later it was already finished. The castle served as a villa/ summer house and Castle for Stephan Sarter, a German stockbroker .  Unfortunately the castle got badly damaged at the end of world war ll. They restored it and the castle is open for visit since 2009. If you have an eye for detail, you can still see some bullet holes from the war.

How to get there & Parking

There are two options on how to get to Schloss Drachenburg. You can take the train, but I would recommend to go by car. This is the easiest way and takes the shortest amount of time walking to the entrance.

Parking costs at Parkplatz am Lemmerz Freibad:

  • 3 Hours – €2,-
  • 6 Hours – €3,-
Once you parked your car, follow the uphill path to Schloss Drachenburg. It will take about 15/20 minutes to reach the entrance of the castle. Here you can pay for your ticket and get a map of the area.

Extra information

How long do you need exploring Schloss Drachenburg?

If you have enough time, I would recommend you to spend around 3/4 hours there. The area is huge and the castle itself takes time to discover.

If you visit Schloss Drachenburg, close to The Eifel Region, make sure to plan some other things to do on this day as well. For example, you can go to Burg Eltz or visit The Geierlay Suspension Bridge. You can also make a trip to Cologne.

Best time to visit

The Eifel Region in Germany is a populair summer destination. However, this area is also perfect in the off-season. Spring and autumn are also good seasons for the Eifel Region because it will be less crowded. Do keep in mind that Germany has many types of weather and also a lot of rain.

My boyfriend and I visited The Eifel Region in the winter which is also a great season. We had almost every place to ourselves and the prices of the accommodations are lower.
